Performance testing of detection media for magnetic particle and penetrant testing

The European standards introduce common methods for the testing of penetrant systems (prEN ISO 3452-2) and detection media for magnetic particle insepction (prEN ISO 9934-2). The most important check for the application of the methods is the perfomrance test which is carried out with standardised test pieces with artificial or natural defects. The measure for the quality of the product is the visibility of the indication which may be determined visually or objectively by optical systems. This paper describes the standardised test pieces for performance check and recommendations on the procedure. For the objective valuation of visibility of the indications, an image processing system is applied in order to check the validity of the mehtod and the recommendations in the standards. The appearing difficulties in the valuation are discussed and should be taken into account fo a revision of the standards. The obtained experiences should be helpful for type testing which will be introduced soon.
