By using an approach other than usual, we derive anexact closed-form expression for the symbol errorprobability (SEP) for arbitrary rectangular M-QAMsignaling over flat Rayleigh fading channels. This hasnever been achieved before as the best-known SER forQAM up to date is only the results obtained for the squareM-QAM. Our rectangular M-QAM result can be readilyextended to find the results for square M-QAM, M-PAM,and antipodal signaling over flat Rayleigh fading channels.Monte Carlo simulations are performed to verify thetheoretical results.
