The motivation for heterogeneous networks arises fromthe fact that no single technology, service or architecturecan provide ubiquitous coverage and high throughputacross all geographical areas. Handoff is the mechanismby which an ongoing connection between a mobile nodeand a correspondent node is transferred from one point ofaccess in the network to another. However, every handoffmay result in the loss of data packets resulting inunnecessary network congestion. It also involves asequence of events in the backbone network, includingrerouting and reregistering the connection, which putadditional loads on the network traffic. Handoff also hasan impact on traffic matching and traffic density.We have proposed and analysed an automated algorithmfor optimised handoff between heterogeneous interfacesto integrate different wireless networks. The interfaceselection algorithm is based on parameters such as currentsignal strength, interface priority, bit rate, throughput andnoise interference. Additionally, introduction of linkquality, hysteresis effect and dwell timers optimise thehandoff initiation time as well as selection of the mostoptimal network.
