In recent years, few MGP projects that involved potentially contaminated sediments have notrnhad at least some basic chemical fingerprinting and age dating component. At the same time, thernsophistication of the methods and the number of practitioners has grown. Several sedimentrnliability cases involving MGPs have settled over the past few years and others are still active.rnThis presentation will summarize recent experiences involving the use of environmentalrnforensic techniques at contaminated sediment sites involving former MGPs. The focus will be onrnthe capabilities and limitations of the available methods, scientific validity of the methods, andrnsome of the triggers for success or failure. For example, the presentation will include:rndescriptions of common PAH sources and how they can be distinguished or not; a survey ofrnlitigation cases and related studies involving contaminated sediments near MGPs; a review of therntechniques applied, what worked, what didn't work; and a discussion of the requisite statistics,rndata analyses, and corroborating data for preparing a convincing story.
