Ferrate ion [Fe(VI)] has been electrochemically generated in-situ in aqueous acidic conditions for the oxidation of an organic compound in bulk solution for the first time. The electrochemical synthesis of [Fe(VI)] in perchloric acid (HClO_4) solution was carried out over an inert electrode of boron-doped diamond (BDD) in the presence of different ferrous solution concentrations in a undivided cell. The usage of ferrate ion electrochemically generated in-situ to promote the oxidation of a common dye, Acid yellow 36 (AY-36), has not been reported before. The results show that the complete removal of AY-36 can be achieved in a shorter time than using typical electro-oxidation processes (EOP) over BDD electrodes.
