The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center(NAVFAC EXWC) has been working on a demonstration project that explores the use ofceramic membrane filtration technology to remove DBP precursors from surface water supplysources. Bench scale tests on synthetic water samples containing humic and fulvic acids wereconducted using 90-mm diameter ceramic flat sheet membranes. Test results indicate that a 15kDa ceramic membrane achieved 89% to 96% TOC removal efficiency on synthetic watersamples prepared by using known amounts of humic or fulvic acids in deionized water. DBPformation potential was reduced from 550 mg/L of TTHM to 23 mg/L, and 1,108 mg/L of HAA5to 23 mg/L, with feed water containing 12 mg/L humic acid. A single element ceramicmembrane unit is currently being studied at a naval installation using water from a drinkingwater treatment plant that treats surface water. High pressure size exclusion chromatography(HPSEC) analysis of the raw water samples indicate that the TOC in this water is primarilycomposed of low molecular weight fulvic acids. Results to date indicate that ceramic membranefiltration is somewhat more effective than coagulation, clarification, and GAC filtration in theremoval of TOC. Additional preconditioning of the water will be required for the direct filtrationof the raw water using CMF to meet DBP standards.
