The Omaha combined storm/sanitary sewer (CSS) rehabilitation at the intersection of 7th & Jones is notable for several reasons. The pipelines involved were very large and old; two sewers running in parallel, made of hand laid brick with diameters of 7.5 feet and 8.5 feet. Initial collapse was sudden and spectacular, stopping traffic and closing a major Omaha intersection, in an important industrial area, for several weeks. Further inspection revealed major degradation in an additional 55 feet of the sewer lines. Near the area of collapse, the parallel sewer lines connected with additional large structures, including a 20' x 20' box culvert, gate valves, large (6-feet) incoming lines, and large retaining structures. This paper discusses the preparation and rehabilitation of the two parallel brick CSS structures.
