Modeling of Calendar Capacity Loss of Graphite-NMC Li-Ion Battery

Nowadays lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used in various portable electronic devices and electric vehicles, owing to their high power and energy densities. The most popular LIB is using graphite anode and NMC(Li_x[MnNiCo]O_2) cathode. However, battery aging is a critical issue for graphite-NMC LIBs, and currently studies on examining their capacity losses through modeling are few. In this presentation, we will first introduce an electrochemical model that was developed for simulating the calendar capacity loss of a graphite-NMC Li-ion battery during the storage period. We will then present our modeling results on investigating the effects of state of charge (SOC), cell working temperature and electrode particle size on calendar capacity loss of a graphite-NMC Li-ion battery. In the end, we will discuss some strategies on reducing the calendar capacity loss and extending the graphite-NMC battery life.
