Effects of Silica Addition to the Methanol Oxidation Catalysts in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

In order to prepare the platinum ruthenium alloy catalysts with high activity,high loading,and high distribution for the methanol oxidation in DMFCs,novel impregnation and incipient wetness methods were developed by Samsung SDI.In these methods,the acid-treated carbon black was used as a substrate and fumed silica was used as a sub-substrate for the increment of surface area,which prevented the platinum particles from aggregating as the loading amount of platinum was increased.All prepared catalysts showed the platinum lattice structure clearly and had a small particle size range of 3~4nm.They also had a face-centered cubic structure and showed a fine distribution in spite of high loading.The merits of this experiment were to construct the mass production process with very simple methods and to be able to increase the yields of platinum utilization.
