Partial denitrification with anammox (PdNA) combines the first step of denitrification (reduction of nitrate to nitrite) with anammox metabolism (converting nitrite and ammonia to nitrogen gas). One method of applying PdNA is through a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in which a biofilm of anammox (AMX) and heterotrophs (OHOs) is established on plastic carriers with a high specific surface area. The key benefits of PdNA are 80% carbon savings and 50% aeration savings over conventional nitrification/denitrification while preventing the need for mainstream NOB out-selection which is difficult to achieve at full scale. These benefits are enhanced using an MBBR, which encourages AMX attachment and retention of a slow-growing microbial community.
