A Consideration on Transition of Traffic Accident Fatalities Using Smeed's Law

Traffic accidents are usually influenced by population growth, urbanization and motorization. In 1938, R.J.Smeed proposed a relationship between the numbers of registered vehicles (N) per population (P) with the number of vehicle traffic deaths (D) per registered vehicle (N) called the Smeed's Law1).The law stated that increasing motorization leads to a decrease in fatalities per vehicle. The aim of this study is to consider the transition of traffic accidents cases of 34 IRTAD members' countries by using statistical data to verify the suitability of Smeed's Law and to find out measures for aging society.
