Crystal structure strongly affects the electronic structure of metal nanoparticles (NPs) andthe crystal structure control is expected to act as a powerful method to drastically change NPproperties.Although bulk Ru adopts the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure,it has beenrecently reported that face-centered cubic (fcc) and hcp Ru NPs were selectively synthesizedand exhibited different catalytic activity.1 This crystal structure control was achieved bychanging metal precursors in the synthesis process;hcp and fcc Ru NPs were synthesized byusing RuCl3·nH2O and Ru(acac)3 (acac =acetylacetonato),respectively.However,crystalstructure control has rarely been studied,and thedetailed mechanism of crystal structure controlis still unrevealed.Elucidating this mechanismwill enable us to control the crystal structure ofother metals and to develop new functionalmaterials.
