What is IDA? Experience and success factors used to eliminate iron deficiency anemia and achieve peak performance that lasts a pigs lifetime

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been a health issue in the swine industry for decades.1 An early suggestion was to provide additional iron even when piglets were produced where soil was avialable to them. Veterinarians in European countries that haveclients using outdoor production practices have sampled piglets for their hemoglobin (Hb) levels around weaning to find the presence of iron deficiency anemia in a high percentage of piglets.2 While not a new topic, recent research has shown that prevention of clinical even sub-clinical IDA is rarely achieved when using the long-standard single 200 mg dose of iron.1 ^ This has led to questions asking what the true impact of IDA is and what dose and timing of injections are necessary to achieve peak performance. It is therefore my goal to update readers on clinical practices that have been successful in preventing IDA and to outline the beneficial results that can occur if the proper amount of iron is provided to meet the piglets' demands.
