High surface porous carbon materials consisted of few-layer graphitic carbons were simply prepared from hard templating method. Crystalline mesoporous ZnO/Zn(OH)2 spheres1 with adequate surface area were used as an acid-labile hard template instead of more commonly employed porous silica materials. Furfuryl alcohol or phloroglucinol were employed as carbon precursors to obtain two different micro-/mesoporous carbons (MCF or MCP).
