Synthesis and reactions of 2,3-diaryltetrazolium mesoionic compounds

5-Chloro-1,3-diphenyltetrazolium (1), a type A mesoionic compound, reacts with amines to give the corresponding amides 21 (Scheme 1), whereas 5-chloro-2,3-diphenyltetrazolium (3), a type B mesoionic compound, undergoes a ring-opening reaction upon exposure to amines such as triethylamine.
