We recently reported that a nickel dithiolate complex having the dicyanopyrazine moiety ([Ni(dcpdt)2] 2? ;; Fig. 1B) electrocatalyzes hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with relatively low overpotential (η = 330-400 mV). Important realization of this study was that the pyrazine unit undergoes the ligand-centered proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), which triggers HER.
