Electrically small resonant scatterers have gained enormous popularity in the field of electromagnetics recently due to their pivotal role in metamaterial design. One of the fundamental physical limitations restricting the application of metamaterials is the inherent narrow bandwidth of the resonators. This paper demonstrates the use of these narrowband scatterers to realize an X-band horn antenna with an integrated tunable notch filter capable of filtering over the entire band (8-12 GHz). It is generally known that the relative positions of the scatterers can be used to tune the response of a metamaterial. This knowledge is applied here along with theory that has been developed in recent years to predict the resonant frequency based upon the relative location of the scatterers.
