Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, affecting 26 million people worldwide, and is thought to be caused by the misfolding and subsequent oligomerisation of beta-amyloid (Abeta). Recent literature suggests Abeta oligomers cause neuronal loss by binding to, and modifying the function of, the cellular prion protein protein (PrPc). This project aims to identify antibodies that will bind to PrPC and prevent Abeta oligomer binding.
