Double-sided Non-destructive Inspection Android Application of Moldy Maize Based on Digital Image Processing

Maize is widely grown around the world; however maize mildew has always been a problem for humans. Aflatoxins are among the most toxic mycotoxins produced mainly by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Eating moldy maize can have long-termeffects on human health, including cancer and immune deficiency. Different from conventional instrument analysis methods such as HPLC, TLC, etc., visual inspection can be a good candidate for grain collection or purchase due to its features of non-destructive, rapid and adaptable. Formly a portable instrument using a cell-phone with Android operating system was developed by our research group, however only one side of maize can be detected at one time. Thus, the main task is to design a brand new portable instrument and an Android application for simultaneous detection of mildew on both sides of maize kernels based on digital image processing technology. Such a portable mildew maize double-sided detection device does not require any lab facilities andis suitable for particularly in resource-limited settings, at home or in the supermarket.
