There is a strong campaign from the medical and veterinary communities and general public to limit antimicrobial use in food-producing animals. This has motivated the development of farm management practices to refine and reduce antimicrobial usage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an algorithm targeting antimicrobial therapy to systemically ill diarrheic calves on four outcomes (incidence of diarrhea, antimicrobial usage rates, overall mortality, and mortality in diarrheic calves). Additionally, the fecal microbiota of healthy, non-antimicrobial-treated calves before and after implementation of algorithm was compared.
