Evaluation of an accelerated hydrogen peroxide disinfectant to inactivate PEDV in swine feces on metal surfaces found in livestock trailers

Since first being detected in 2013, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has devastated swine farms in the US. Livestock trailers present a significant risk for the spread of PEDV from infected herds to other swine around the nation. The standard method for decreasing the risk of transmission of PEDV via livestock trailers is thorough washing, disinfecting, and drying, with or without assisted drying. However, not all producers can afford the time, cost or both, to wash, disinfect and dry trailersafter every load. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of an accelerated hydrogen peroxide disinfectant (Accel~R, Virox Technologies Inc., Oakville, Ontario, Canada) for inactivating PEDV in the presence of feces on metal surfaces found in livestock trailers.
