摘要

In view of the growing consumption of fossil fuels, lignocellulosic biomass represents the most abundant hydrocarbon source in nature to meet the ultimate sustainable societal need for chemical products and liquid fuels. A growing economy based on the renewable hydrocarbons will also benefit the environment with carbon-neutral green house gas emissions. Polysaccharides in nature constitute dominantly hexoses and pentoses. Glucose is the most abundant molecule among hexoses as the fundamental building block of cellulose and starch. Fructose is an important ketose in nature, even though it is considerably less abundant than glucose.
