This paper presents a practical approach and process that can be used by Asset Owners (Utilities) to ensure Hydro Machine Upgrades and Modernisations achieve suitable reliability and maintainability starting with the re-design process. Designing for suitable reliability, maintainability and life is a key aspect that affects the life cycle cost of power stations and a professional approach to this is needed to ensure major projects deliver best for business outcomes in the long term (40 years plus). The steps and process recommended in this paper to achieve the benefits are based on 6 years of experience on Hydro Tasmania's Poatina and Tungatinah Hydro Power Station Upgrade and Modernisation Projects (combined project value approximately $200 Million AUD).
