Designing a Modular, Portable Data Acquisition and Control System

A wide spectrum of industries rely on Data Acquisition and Control Systems (DACS). As systems age, maintenance of obsolete parts and programs becomes increasingly expensive. Typically, organizations perform a forklift replacement, where the obsolete system is replaced with a new custom design. This practice can lead to costly duplication of design effort. A life-cycle approach to DACS can provide significant savings. Additionally, a portable design can provide the benefits of standardization, security, lower development costs and long term maintenance savings. It can take advantage of new technology without requiring costly major replacement. The Generic Data Acquisition and Control System (GDACS), used at the Bureau of Reclamation’s Grand Coulee Dam as well as twelve other Corps of Engineer dams is an example of a successful, generic, portable, life-cycle based system. This presentation will describe and illustrate the elements of an effective architecture that accomplishes these goals and approaches for developing such an architecture.
