Light weight engineering in structural design and use of lighter materials are becoming an increasingly important subject in bulk metal forming. The results that are gained by a project that is funded by the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" (DFG) are introduced, concerning novel advancements of hollow lateral extrusion. This paper exhibits the further development of the process that makes it possible to easily manufacture undercut components without using a lateral tool plane. The center of attention will be the tool design as well as on the analysis of the unmodified forming process. Therefore, experimental investigations will be carried out, failures on components will be analyzed and process limitations of an experimental setup for cold forging of hollow billets at room temperature will be illustrated.
