Environmental conditions have reinforced the need for rainfall independent water sources to be seriously considered for most capital cities around Australia. Seawater Desalination Plants are or will be utilised to supply state water grids with 100's of ML/d of desalinated seawater. The design lives of the major assets and asset components of Seawater Desalination Plants may be as much as 100 years. Durability assessment, durability design and durability planning has become an integral part of the tender and detailed design phases to minimise the risks of long term deterioration of assets and asset components. This paper outlines the concept of durability plans, details durability risks identified, durability strategies proposed and performance assessment and monitoring requirements for the various Australian seawater desalination plants.
