Clinical profile and prognosis of young patients with ischemic cardiopathy

Coronary artery disease is the main cause of death in the developed world, also affecting young people; however many aspects of coronary artery disease in young people are not completely understood. Our study concerns a series of 125 patients < 40 years with acute coronary syndrome admitted to our Cardiology Department. We saw that the most common risk factor in young patients was current tobacco use, as well as high cholesterol or have a family history of coronary heart disease or male gender. The most frequent presenting diagnoses was Acute Myocardial Infarction without previous history of ischemic cardiopathy, with single-vessel disease of the left anterior descending coronary artery predominating. Percutanous treatment with uncovered stents was used in the majority of cases and with a considerable rate of restenosis. The patients treated surgically had fewed readmissions and better functional level. The long-term prognosis was excellent and directly related to a preserved systolic function and a low rate of complications.
