摘要

Remote off-grid communities typically utilize diesel generator (DG) for electricity production. This is the result of economic decisions related to the cost of other energy sources or of transmission and distribution lines over a vast territory. There are several environmental and social concerns related to use of DG, such as: communities are susceptible to electricity blackouts, pollution from exhaust gases, and loud noise from DG. Also, this method of electricity production is relatively inefficient because of low efficiency of diesel engine (Figure 1), expensive because of high fuel transport costs and is responsible for the emission of millions tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) annually (1,2 millions tons/year only in Canada). In an effort to reduce the economic, environmental, and social costs, remote communities are investing in renewable electricity generators such as wind energy converters.
