Applications of Thermodynamic Databases to Steelmaking Processes

Computerized thermodynamic databases for solid and liquid oxide and steel of large numbers of components have been developed over the last three decades by critical evaluation/optimization of all available phase equilibrium and thermodynamic data. With user friendly software, which accesses these databases, complex chemical reactions and phase equilibria occurring in various steelmaking processes can be calculated over a wide range of composition, temperature and oxygen partial pressure. In the present study, the thermodynamic models and databases for liquid oxide and liquid steel, in particular, of the FactSage software and FACT database will be briefly reviewed and their applications to complex steelmaking processes involving molten steel, slag, inclusions, refractories and gases will be presented.
