Air purifying effect of Activated Carbon Fibers Installed in sound-insulation panel at highway in Japan

Activated Carbon Fibers (ACF) have both rapid adsorption effect of pollutants and sound absorption effect because of its thin fibrous shape of 10-20 microns in diameter. We have developed new sound insulation panel that has ACF inside in it. It utilizes only natural wind power and purifies the air with energy free. This panel was installed in national highway R23 at Nagoya city, Japan in 2014 where air pollution was very severe because of heavy traffic jam. The performance of this panel measured at the real highway showed 56% of NO2 removal and over 33dB of noise reduction. This NO2 removal agreed with the decrease of 5200 of large diesel cars volume per day. Removed NO2 was oxidized into NO3~- ion by the catalytic effect of ACF. Therefor this ACF sound-insulation panel gives long duration by washing out NO3- by rain fall.
