Viewing the Succession and Development of Historical Context and Traditional Architecture through the Thoughts of 'Reviving Ancient Forms' in the History of Western Architecture

Going back to see the history of western architecture, it is found that the thought of "reviving ancient forms" continuously appeared: Roman architecture, Romanesque architecture, Renaissance architecture and Classical architecture in the ancient history;the Classical revival architecture, Romanticism architecture and Eclectic architecture in the modern history;the New classical architecture, New rationalism architecture and New regionalism architecture in the contemporary history. Every thought is a return to the old culture. This paper firstly tries to analyze and compare the origin and expressions of the succession and development, and the historical significance of the thoughts of "reviving ancient forms", then it tries to sorts out how the historical context and traditional architecture act on the development of architecture, and what is the relationship between tradition and modern, succession and development. In the end, the article concludes that the tradition should be succeeded, the succession must be based on re-creation, and regress to tradition is only one of the possible ways for architectural creation.
