Fullerenes and fullerene derivatives constitute an important class of nanomaterials that are proposed for used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from medical applications, to lubricants, to fuel cells and fullerenes are currently being uses as additives in cosmetic creams. The increasing use of fullerenes has led to growing concern over the impact a release of these materials may have on human and environmental health. This concern has prompted studies on the toxicity of fullerenes and fullerene derivatives and the potential for these materials to be transported in environmental systems.
