In this paper, we investigated the di/dt capability and the turn-on action of GTO thyristor with the assist of a series connected saturable inductor for short pulse duration operation, and made comparison with the performance of pulse thyristor. We made comparative experiments on a magnetic-assist 4.5-kV GTO thyristor and a 4.5-kV pulse thyritor. The measurements show that the turn-on losses and conduction losses of the GTO are only a few Joules, which are less than those under conventional situations. Detailed results on the temporal behavior of the GTO and the pulse thyristor are presented. PSpice simulation circuit of the GTO is also developed.
