National Forest Inventories (NFI) in Britain such as the Forestry Commissions National Inventory of Woodlands and Trees (NIWT) and the Scottish Native Woodland Survey (SNWS) provide a synoptic view of the current extent, condition and location of forest resources. The NFIs not only need to be accurate and precise but also up-to-date. The methodology implemented in Britain relies on photo-interpretation analysis of digital aerial photographs combined with field-based methods. This methodology, besides its advantages, is perceived as cost-intensive.
