Think of the word globalization. What ideas come to mind? One might say business theory, free trade,economics, technology and development. As students from around the world become increasinglymobile and seek to study abroad, globalization has now become a focus for discussion in the area ofeducation. In Canada, international education now holds such strong economic value that it isconsidered a revenue generating industry in itself. This paper will discuss the internationalization ofhigher education, the economic effects of international students studying in Canada and the variousinitiatives put in place by the Canadian government and post-secondary institutions. Using theprovince of Saskatchewan and the University of Saskatchewan as examples, this paper alsodiscusses the programs and student recruitment activities that have been implemented to attract andretain international students, while examining the benefits and implications that can arise.In 2009, the Government of Canada released a report which assessed the economic contributions thatinternational students brought to the country. The report entitled “Economic Impact of InternationalEducation in Canada” highlighted the fact that international students in Canada contributedapproximately $6.5 billion to the national economy, provided 83,000 jobs, and contributed $291 millionin government revenue”. It is important to recognize and understand the effects of globalization oneducation in order to adapt to this dynamic and ever-changing environment.
