Stateville Speaks is a newsletter written by both prison inmates and university students. Prisonerslearn of its motto: “If you speak, you will be heard.” Newsletter content focuses on the Americancriminal justice system that incarcerates a larger percentage of its population than does any othercountry on earth. Stateville Speaks is a project-based curricular innovation created using 21stCentury skills including communication, collaboration, creative innovation, critical thinking,information and media management, and technology expertise. It raises the awareness of studentsand leads them to work for reform and justice. Stateville Speaks is a local innovation that serves USprisons in the state of Illinois. It is named for Stateville Correctional Center, an Illinois prison. It isavailable on the Internet and serves as a model of curricular innovation that can be replicated inother states and countries.
