The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pulse pressure (PP) measured during the acute period of stroke on functional outcome in ischemic stroke patients. We reviewed the medical records of 78 first-ever hemiplegic ischemic stroke patients. Functional outcomes were measured by using Korean-Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Korean-National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (K-NIHSS), Criteria for Rating Eight Stages of Functional Ability (CRESFA), and Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) at 3 days and 3 months after the onset of stroke in all the subjects. There were inverse correlations between PP and FIM at 3 months and between PP MMSE scores at 3 months. There were inverse correlations between PP and the differences of K-MBI, FIM, and CRESFA, respectively. PP measured during the acute period of stroke would be useful of predicting the functional outcome in ischemic stroke patients.
