Encapsulation Effects on Homogeneous Electron Self-Exchange Dynamics in Tris(Bipyridine) Iron-Core Dendrimers

A series of tris(bipyridine) iron core dendrimers was synthesized up to the second generation. Their homogeneous electron self-exchange dynamics were studied by NMR line-broadening. While the first generation dendrimers showed dramatically attenuated electron self-exchange rate with respect to dimethyl-bipyridine iron complex, little rate change between the first and second generation dendrimers was observed. These results suggest that the effective distance of electron transfer in this homogeneous self-exchange case is not a simple function of dendrimer generation.
