Volatile organic compounds (VOC) reduction is one of the most important current challenges for the paint manufacturers. As a VOC reduction compliant technology, water borne coatings arepredicted to strongly develop in coming years particularly in the industrial coatings sector. One of the difficulties for formulators, especially with cosolvent-free systems, is the effective incorporation and correct dispersion of additives, like light stabilizers which are mostly hydrophobic substances. Due to the lack of techniques allowing such additives to be easily incorporated into waterborne coatings without impairing their performances, introducing new product forms addressing this issue became mandatory. Progress has been made with the development of water compatible product forms of water insoluble hydrophobic additives by using heterophase polymerization techniques. The process is applicable for the generation of additive preparations compatible with many aqueous binder systems.
