The Nebamun Wall Paintings of the British Museum

The Nebamun Wall Paintings, a collection of Eighteenth Dynasty tomb paintings from Thebes in ancient Egypt, are among the most treasured possessions of the British Museum. They are exquisite works of art (James 1985: 26-3.3). A curatorial plan to display them in a new setting that will do justice to their magnificence has been in existence for some time. However, a condition survey carried out in March 2000, revealed that most of them are in urgent need of conservation, These two issues combined gave the impetus for the launch of a major program of archaeological reevaluation involving scientific analysis to underpin and support the conservation of the paintings.
