Investigation of Toluene Waste Gas Treatment with Biotrickling Filter

The removal of toluene from gas stream has been investigated in a biotrickling filter. The packing of the filter is the blast-furnace slag. The bacterium can degrade toluene was selected and cultured and then the bacterium was transferred to the filter and formed a biofilm on the surface of the packing. The results indicated that, the increasing of toluene inlet concentration (C) declined the elimination efficiency (η); when the C were less than 4 mg/L, the η kept more than 90%; the elimination capacity (E) can reached 3823.5 mg/(L h); increasing of the retention time (t) enhanced the η, keeping the t more than 2.5min could held the η more than 95% when the C was about 0.5mg/L. Designing biotrickling filter in industry should the residence time be not less than a certain value and neither more much than the value. The nutrient supplying is very essential to maintain high elimination efficiency and the longtime run with satisfying performance of the system.
