The sensor networks are paid attention to according to the advance of the technologies on low electric power and high performance CPU radio communication. In order to construct an easy to deploy and cost effective sensor networks, the ad hoc network technology is indispensable. In a real world sensor network, the high density distribution of sensors is one of the major issues to be considered. For example, it is possible that there are hundreds of sensors in the radio propagation area of a certain sensor. Such a sensor network can be built by applying a high density ad hoc network technologies. This paper proposes a procedure to select landmark nodes which work as relaying nodes for routing control messages and data packets. In our approach, nodes exchange Hello messages containing neighbor information periodically, nodes find their neighbors and two hop neighbors, and selected landmark nodes again select landmark nodes around them in turn, which is repeated until landmark nodes are selected throughout a network. This paper describes the detailed procedure and the results of selecting landmark nodes. The simulation results show that only a part of nodes are used as landmark nodes in a high density network environment.
