An Update on NIOSH Isocyanate Activities

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related disease and injury. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Department of Health and Human Services. NIOSH isocyanate research began in the 1970's with the publication of 2 Criteria for a Recommended Standard documents and continues today with the development of novel analytical methods and exposure assessment studies. This presentation will provide conference attendees with an overview of NIOSH publications, research activities, and general recommendations related to isocyanate exposures and worker health. NIOSH research involving health hazard evaluations, air sampling and analysis, engineering controls, asthma surveillance, and internal and external research studies will be discussed. The presentation will conclude with an overview of the latest NIOSH recommendations and general approach to assessing workplaces with isocyanate-exposed workers.
