Policy, technology, and economic developments are aiding the rapid expansion of wind power in the United States. Yet wind industry stakeholders have paid little attention to better understanding their principal customer, the electric utility. Seven case studies evaluating utility approaches to acquiring wind energy resources reveal the regulatory, financial, and context-specific factors driving the decision-making process. Analysis comprises vertically integrated investor-owned utilities (IOUs), distribution companies, and public power in diverse geographic, regulated, and competitive environments.
