An automated sensor has been developed for use during paper manufacture that can measure flexural rigidity (bending stiffness) and shear rigidity (important, for example, for scoring or corrugating,). Based on laser ultrasonic technology, this sensor provides continuous noncontact on-line measurements in either the MD or CD at basis weights from 35 to 205 g/m2 at commercial web speeds. It has been successfully tested on a pilot web handler and a pilot coater and is currently undergoing mill trials on a high speed printing paper grade machine. The current laser ultrasonic stiffness sensor (LUSS) is easily integrated into an existing ABB Smart Platform and uses data from that platform to compensate the LUSS measurements for moisture, basis weight, temperature and web tension.
