Aqueous dispersions of anionic polyurethane (PU) ionomers were prepared from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polyester polyol (based on adipic acid, neopentyl glycol and 1,2,6-hexane triol) and acrylic polyol of molecular weight 1000 using dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as the potential ionic centre. The reaction was carried out by using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as the solvent without any catalyst. After neutralizing the carboxylic groups in DMPA with triethyl amine (TEA) and adding water to PU ionomer solution, stable aqueous PU dispersions were obtained. The effect of acrylic polyol on particle size and its distribution has been studied by autosizer. The mechanical properties of emulsion cast films were determined by using universal tensile tester (Instron). The viscosity of the dispersions was measured by Brookfield viscometer.
