Relatively recently, the role of the phenomenon of liquid slip at a solid surface in lubrication has started to be evaluated. Bearings with reduced friction or with simple construction and low profiles have been proposed by various researchers. The authors have published in the past, results of the load carrying capacity of a heterogeneous, slip/non - slip surface, sliding against a non - slip surface. Theoretical analysis of such a system shows that the pressure distribution is linear on the two sides of the heterogeneous surface that is similar to the pressure distribution in a step bearing. Based on this observation, in the current work the authors show the results of a comparison between heterogeneous surface and step bearings, with similar geometries.
