Aviano Air Base Runway Improvements: Flexibility and Creativity Overcome Adverse Conditions

This project is an excellent example of the real-world adaptation that must occur in order to complete airfield pavement construction projects in coordination with operational requirements. Creativity and common sense were called upon frequently as the project team responded to adverse weather, changed site conditions, and phasing problems that could have slowed or stopped construction. The eight-vibrator track hoe attachment, neoprene joint sealant roller, moveable lane covers, use of soil stabilization cement, and innovative use of an asphalt paver heater all demonstrate how the reality of construction requires flexibility and imagination to solve challenging site conditions. By truly coming together as a team, the Navy ROICC office, Air Force Operations, KBR, and Cave Asfalti focused on the product, not the process, to successfully complete this critical airfield pavement improvement.
