Applications of Layer-by-layer Ultrathin Films: New materials, Devices, and Functions

The alternate layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes for preparing ultrathin films has been extended to include nanoparticles and core-hell or hollow-shell formation on colloidal particle templates. Nanostructured interfaces and supramolecular assemblies are important consequences of this uniquely versatile technique.New characterization methods and innovative experiments have increased our fundamental understanding and function of these systems.An important step that has followed this trail is the development of new devices and their unique applications.Although these materials have found interest as membrane materials, surface modifiers, barrier materials, drug delivery substrates, and others, interesting new applications in electro-optical displays, semiconductors, sensors, actuators, have been reported.This talk surveys recent developments in this field as well as our own recent work.
