Dimensioning of shaft-to-hub connections - state of research vs. standardisation exemplified by interference-fits and keyway connections
Shaft-hub-connections play a vital role in the power train performance of all kinds of machinery. Operationally reliable design is, therefore, indispensable. Although the current design approach based on nominal stress has been proven in practice, its applicability to geometries beyond those tested in experimental investigations is limited due to an incomplete understanding of the influence of physical parameters with respect to fretting fatigue. New, local-strain approaches, such as short fatigue crack growth and critical plane, could offer solutions. These are briefly introduced here along with initial promising results. However, further investigations that also relate to the cyclic material properties are urgently needed.
